"In between": Bridges in cinema // Bezalel Academy (Forth year)
500*1500 mm
In this course, we were asked to choose a film from a given list.
We then had to create a design project influenced by the film we selected.
My selection was “Spirited Away” (Miyazaki, 2001), and my project was influenced
by one of its main themes: the bridge. I found an interesting article by director
Chale Nafus which investigates the use of bridges in cinema. Nafus claims:
“Rarely does a movie character just crosses a bridge to get to the other side".
He adds: "The passage over a bridge often signifies some kind of change—a transition
into a new phase of life, connection with a new person, or confrontation with danger or even death".
I chose 21 scenes from movies which involve bridges.
Using infographics, I divided the bridges I found into 4 categories: the film's genre,
the bridge's length, the film's main theme (coming out of age, relationship turning point, or death)
and the bridge's role in the scene (providing passage, a meeting point or a decoration).
