“POP”: Final Project // Bezalel Academy (forth year)
330*250 mm
I have always loved Pop, notorious as it is.
When we think about its definition, we tend to view pop as a music genre,
or associate it with the famous art movement. But what is the real essence of Pop?
Is it limited to those two subjects only?
I started to research Pop as a concept and I realized it had no single definition.
With that in mind, I collected every single thing I found to be “Pop”: From Britney’s songs,
to Moschino’s Mcdonald collection. From Andy Warhol’s marilyns to the IKEA catalogue.
From Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” to the addictive “Keeping up with the Kardashians”.
What do they all have in common?
I narrowed down a list of 10 characteristics to 4 main ones:
INSTANT - quick, simple, immediate and super clear.
REPETITIVE - doing the same thing again, and again, and once again.
APPROPRIATING - stealing or referencing ideas from whomever and whatever.
AROUSING - sweet, sexy, exciting and very inviting,
Thus was born “Pop Magazine”.
Each issue is dedicated to each of the pop characteristics I assembled.
Containing the current Pop the world has to offer, The magazine showcases
art, fashion, cinema, food, music and television.
The four characteristics influenced my design and editing choices
in order to make the project as POP as possible:
It is an article-free magazine, meant for quick browsing (INSTANT)
It is a quarterly magazine (REPETITIVE)
It is all ready-made (APPROPRIATING)
It is colorful, bright and above all: joyful (AROUSING)
